The Beliefs of The Refuge @ The Lake
“In essentials we have unity. In non-essentials we have liberty. In all things we have charity.”

Most denominations and churches have a multitude of doctrines and beliefs. We keep ours simple and straightforward. We like to divide our beliefs into three categories. Core beliefs, Secondary beliefs, and Tertiary beliefs.

Essential or Core beliefs are things we are dogmatic about. Beliefs that we consider cornerstones of our faith. It doesn’t mean you have to believe them to come, but they are beliefs we will defend and not compromise on as a church, or a collection of churches.

  • We believe in the Triune God, (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit).
  • We believe that Jesus died, was buried, and rose from the grave and will physically return.
  • We believe that God’s Word is without error and is the sole authority for life.
  • We believe that we are created in God’s image but marred by sin and believe that Jesus is the only source of salvation.
  • It is through repentance and faith that we are saved and all those who reject Christ will spend an eternity in hell.
  • We believe that followers of Christ should be baptized in water by immersion following conversion.
  • We believe that every believer has direct access to God through Jesus.
  • We believe in the universal church and the local church. The local church is composed of believers who live out their lives in missional communities with other believers making disciples who make disciples.
  • We believe that God made both Male and Female, and that marriage is between one man and one woman, reflecting the divine image of God.

Then we have certain beliefs we consider to be secondary beliefs. This is where many churches disagree in areas of style or on end times beliefs or even in spiritual gifts. By saying they are secondary we are not saying they are not important. However, these differences should not prevent believers from collaborating when it comes to fundamental matters.

Then there are beliefs that might even extend to what we call, “Tertiary.” Sometimes these are hard to define. The bottom line is that there are many things in the Bible most believers would agree we are going to have to get to Heaven before we figure out exactly what God meant by putting them in the Bible.
